Cloud development over Rice Lake is generally linked to large scale weather systems and widespread uplift of air above a large region; however, the local landscape topography at Rice Lake is capable of occasionally producing certain cloud forming situations.  Here the configuration and elevation of the land to the south of Rice Lake, toward Lake Ontario, becomes relevant. The easternmost section of the Oak Ridges Moraine forms a rather broad upland ridge of east-west orientation between Rice Lake and the north shore of Lake Ontario between Port Hope and Grafton.
