Due to the artist’s constant theme and visual concentration on a specific geographic area of study, her process is often one where the energy, brush of light, colour and instinct determine the outcome of the work.
View from the Studio Terre Neuve Gallery, Aurora 2010
The earliest paintings in this series were generated from close observations of the effects of time, weather, and in particular, the impact of light and visibility on this single place - the view from my studio facing west over Rice Lake..
The larger works are more closely connected to and directed by an interior life, influenced by daily experiences and my concerns about the world and events. It is through a form of automatism, focused by place, that these paintings reveal aspects of expressionism and abstraction with references to realism. It is the freedom of experimentation set up between these combined formal approaches which compels me and results in unexpected tensions on the surface of the canvas.
